Choosing the right printer can be confusing. There are a few things that you want to consider before buying a printer for your home. You don’t necessarily want to buy the cheapest or the most expensive. Here are some tips for choosing the right printer for your needs.
First of all let me explain the main difference between an ink-jet printer and a laser printer. The main difference is speed. Laser printers are normally used for business and not for home use. Laser printers are much faster than ink-jet printers. If you print reams of black and white text documents, you probably need the quality, speed, and low per-copy cost of a laser printer. A personal black and white only, laser printer will start at about $200. However, a color laser printer is going to be much more expensive, somewhere around $400 – $500.
If you use your printer mainly for the kid’s book reports, printing out recipes or the occasional picture, a good ink-jet printer is going to be more logical. You do want to compare the PPM or pages per minute. This is the speed at which the printer prints out a page. The larger the number, the faster the printer. This number may vary in different models. You also want to look for the DPI or dots per inch. This determines the resolution of your printer. The higher the number the better the resolution will be. I would not be too concerned with the resolution unless you do a lot of photo printing. A good, reliable printer will start about $80. inkjet printer manufacturers
If you work from home or run a small business, you may need the versatility of an all-in-one printer. An all-in-one printer will combine a printer, copier, scanner and fax machine. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good all-in-one printer and it will save you space as well as money. Again you want to compare the PPI and the DPI numbers, don’t just settle for the most inexpensive. A good all-in-one will start about $100.
If you are a photographer and you want to do your own printing, you are going to want to get a premium color printer. Depending on the quality you want in your pictures as to how much you want to spend on a good quality photo printer. Photo printers are made to get the best resolution and color as possible. You can also get a high resolution all-in-one printer for not much more money. They will run you about $250. but will be well worth the savings you will get not having to pay someone else to print your photos for you.
You want to watch your ink replacement cost. Some printers may seem like the better buy until you check on the price of the ink. That is where some of them make their money. Now there are printers that use separate ink cartridges for each color. If you choose a printer that only has the two cartridges, color and black, it is going to cost you more. You may run out of one color in your regular ink cartridge but you will have to replace the entire cartridge. This will become wasteful and more expensive. If you have separate ink cartridges for each color, you will only have to replace them one at a time. I print my own photos and find the separate ink cartridges much more cost effective. Prices will start at about $200. for one of these new all-in-one printers, again, depending on the picture quality you want
